Coersive Contortion #1 (2024)
The TATE INSITUTE
Photographs by Adam Southgate
Coercive Contortion is an interactive performance that examines the influence of capitalism, rooted in colonialism, on our everyday lives. This piece explores how these structures twist our identities and limit our capacity for authentic self-expression.
Audience interaction is central as I weave my narrative with broader sociological and psychological insights. Together, we question how deeply these oppressive systems permeate our daily existence. How do we resist becoming mere instruments within societal machinery? Coercive Contortion continues the exploration of personal liberation, a recurring theme in my work, building on the ideas of Comfortably Uncomfortable and In the Wake of Ruin.
Special thanks to Neng Nyananyo for workshopping and performing this piece with me, and to Koumbah Janneh for their invaluable grounding and consultation throughout its creation.
